Our interior design for a nineteenth-century shingled home on an island in Narragansett Bay, historic and quieter than nearby Newport. The clients fell for the area and wanted to live there year-round. The house already had good character, so rather than gut it, we worked with what was there and amplified the summer feeling of being near water.

Soft color at different levels of intensity carries the house: lemons, ochres, and summer greens, with turquoise and raspberry accents. Moving room to room, we changed the notes so no two spaces repeat. An ocher sofa with orange pillows in the living room and a grass-green striped rug in the primary bedroom. The same palette warms and quietens in the dining room, letting an antique table and hutch anchor the space. Mid-century and vintage pieces mix throughout. A summer house, built to work all year.
