A four-story Gothic Revival built in 1907 by architect William A. Bates. This 7,500-square-foot Westchester home came with restored oak paneling, leaded windows, and a stone-and-shingle exterior. Handsome, but stuck in its Old English past. The clients, a family of five with a golden retriever, wanted it pulled into this century without losing the bones.

The foyer set the tone. We had the ceiling lacquered in an ultra-high-gloss Wedgewood blue to play against the oak, and that blue carries through the house. The clients love color and animal patterns, so we worked those in room by room. Tiger-print upholstery in the living room. A muted cheetah carpet in the primary bedroom.
